Lawson’s Premium Uji Matcha Roll Cake – A conbini sweets report
Wherever you go in Japan, you’re sure to encounter countless conbini (the official Japanese abbreviation for convenience store). And right now, conbini-brand sweets are all the rage! Every Tuesday, each conbini puts out their new, original products at the same time; they’re at constant battle to win our patronage. While appealing to customers with the use of seasonal fruits, local/famous ingredients, etc., a great effort is made to produce the most affordable, high-quality products. After trying a number of the most popular items, I’d like to introduce you to one that I felt was particularly mention-worthy!

Premium Uji Matcha Roll Cake
Price:195 yen (Tax incl.)
Sale date:June 7, 2016
This roll cake is made with Uji matcha from Kyoto’s famous Tsujirihei Honten.
As I peeled away the outer packaging, I noticed the cake was encased in hard plastic to preserve its shape. I took it out gently as it seemed extremely delicate.
It even came with a spoon!
I decided against cutting it in half, however, as I was worried the cream in the middle would leak out.
Cake so soft it practically melts in your mouth. Chewing not required!
An unforgettable combination of the slight bitterness of matcha sponge cake and a matcha whipped cream filling that is sweet, but not too sweet. A match made in heaven, surely! I highly recommend this cake to anyone who likes matcha or tends to lean towards desserts that aren’t overwhelmingly sweet.
