The Kasuga Wakamiya On-Matsuri is held at Wakamiya Shrine, an auxiliary site of Kasuga Grand Shrine. It is a grand festival, held to pray for bountiful crops and comfortable lives. Presently the event begins in July, and the main ritual is held from December 15th through 18th.

In 1135, due to heavy rainfall and flooding, famines and epidemics ravaged the area.
To relieve the people of the area, the emperor at the time’s chief advisor, Notadamichi Fujiwara, authorized the building of a temporary shrine on a similar scale to the main shrine.
This became Wakamiya Shrine. After asking for help from the gods, in the following year (1136), the first festival to greet and pay respects to the spirits of Wakamiya Shrine was held: the first “On-Matsuri.”
The On-Matsuri has been held every year without fail for over 880 years now.
