The Fukuoka Christmas Market first launched in 2013 at the JR Hakata Station front plaza. With each passing year, the venues have expanded to include Tenjin and Nakasu, illuminating the city of Fukuoka during winter. Now, in its 11th year in 2023, the occasion has evolved into a full-fledged Christmas Advent. Head out during the four-week event to see the city streets in all the merry glory of illuminations.
The larger-than-life Christmas tree and illuminations near JR Hakata Station and Fukuoka City Hall are just a start, as spots across the city including the Kokaido Kihinkan (Prefectural Guest House), Tenjin Central Park, and others are all set aglow. As an extra perk, the Fukuoka Daimyo Garden City has joined the ranks with its own illuminations as of 2023, and along Nakasu avenue you can even find Nakasu Hikari no Advent, a special light display that ties in all the different illuminations.
For foodies, head over to the main venues for a warm mug of glühwein (mulled wine) and hot chocolate to warm up and enjoy along with classic Christmas bites. You may also stumble across shops selling authentic Christmas goods from Europe.
Step out and see the city all wrapped up in the cozy vibes of joy and hope as the days count down to Christmas, a winter a tradition in Fukuoka that makes the season all the more magical.
