Every spring, gaggles of residents and tourists alike flock to Ueno Park to admire the beauty that is the cherry blossom. With over 1,200 cherry trees, Ueno Park prides itself as being one of Tokyo’s most popular spots for hanami, or cherry blossom viewing.

Once the blossoms begin to come into bloom, you’ll have to fight tooth and nail—or arrive in the wee hours of the morning—to seize the perfect spot to lay your picnic blanket. Many spend all year looking forward to sitting under the fluffy, pink trees while eating, drinking, and laughing with their friends, families, or coworkers.
During the festival, you can even find food stalls spread out through the park.
However, you should be prepared to wait in long lines. And at night time, a thousand paper lanterns strung from tree to tree illuminate the blossoms, making for a magical night time experience.

※The lights are expected to remain on until 8 p.m.
