Tokyo, Shinagawa’s Hostel for Enjoying Art, ARTnSHELTER
ARTnSHELTER first opened in December of 2015.
As its name suggests, ARTnSHELTER is a museum-like hostel where guests can enjoy various works of art!
It also features a multimedia space that plays ultra-widescreen movies!
Convenient Transportation
ARTnSHELTER is conveniently located only 2 minutes on foot from the Keikyu Main Line’s Samezu Station.
Shinagawa Station is only 5 minutes from Samezu Station, and Haneda Airport is only 19 minutes away.
It really is the perfect location for sightseeing in Tokyo!

You can see the hostel from the station’s platform.

a Chiq Exterior
The 1st floor is home to the gallery space and a café bar, while the 2nd and 3rd floors are the hostel itself.

Here is the entrance hall.

Paintings are on display in the lobby.
Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the building.

You need a card key to access each floor.
You can pick up your floor card and locker key at the reception desk.

The staircase is spiral-shaped. There is no elevator.

Free Coffee and Black Tea!
Here is the café and bar area. Guests can enjoy free coffee and black tea here.
The staff is extremely friendly.
I ordered a cup of coffee.

Artsy Architectural Style
The lobby has an atrium built in, giving it a very open feeling.

The rooms are also very open.

There was art down in the basement too.
The architecture here was simple, but it felt artsy at the same time.

Types of Rooms
★Cheapest Variety, Open Dormitory Type★
Here beds line the hallway. This is the open dormitory type lodging, which costs 2350 yen (tax incl.).

★4 Bed Dormitory★
Here is a private-type room. There are rooms that hold 2 and 4 people. The 4-person room costs 3250 yen (tax incl.).

You put the sheets onto the bed yourself. This way, you can see for yourself that the sheets have been properly cleaned and maintained.

There’s also an outlet in the perfect location. You can even connect directly with USB cables.
There is a light right next to the beds.

I stayed in a 4-person room this time, but I was the only one in the room and had it all to myself.
However, the walls seemed to be rather thin, as I could hear conversations going on in neighboring rooms.

Facility Amenities
The kitchen. You can cook your own meals here.

Of course, lockers are also provided.

Here is the shower. Shampoo and body soap are provided.
Toothbrushes and towels are available for a fee.

The toilets look very clean and well-maintained.

Walking Around the Hostel’s Area
Tonkotsu Ramen Doraku. It’s open 24 hours.

Sukiya. If you’re hungry, why not have a cheap and tasty bowl of Japanese gyudon?

My Basket, a convenience store and supermarket. It’s located nice and close by to the hostel.

Their boxed lunches and other prepared goods are cheaper than those of typical convenience stores.

And when you go past the Keikyu Line’s Samezu Station…

…You can see the McDonald’s located near the station.
Introducing Some Interesting Services!
★A Free Clothing Rental Service?! ★
This unique service allows you to rent clothes that you like for free from a shared closet.

Why not rent a coat when you’re chilly, or try wearing some clothes that don’t fit into your usual everyday wear?

★Ultra-Widescreen Films★
Back at the hostel, there was a movie screening going on.
Movie screening times and selections are not fixed. Instead, they are put on as the staff sees fit.
The projection surrounded the room, making for an excellent atmosphere.
The atrium provides a sense of openness.

After spending the night…
Morning arrived.

You can see Samezu Station from the window.
Checkout is just leaving your key cards in the key return box.

This hostel truly was more of an artful experience than I had expected!

In Summary
- This hostel is both cheap and tidy, and you can easily spend a day enjoying its art. Its gallery space and café bar were also great additions.
- However, the lack of towels, slippers, or elevator was a bit of an inconvenience.
- Perhaps this facility is best suited for travelers like backpackers rather than businesspeople.
Attractions: Free coffee and black tea. Randomly selected movies. Beautiful spaces. Nearby supermarket.
