Matsuyashiki
A Beautiful Japanese Garden Spanning 33,000m2
Garden
Matsuyashiki is the house and garden that was built for the ill second daughter of the 2nd generation owner of the Kanaya Hotel, Shin-ichi Kanaya. Only the garden is open to the public. The large Japanese garden spans an area of around 10,000 tsubo, or approximately 33,000m2, and it features ponds as well as over 150 red pine trees. From the house and gokakudo (pentagonal annex building) to the falls and ponds that get water from the Akasawa River as well as the azalea flowers and autumn leaves, Matsuyashiki features beautiful scenery year-round. Along the cliff to the east of the grounds is the remains of an old hydroelectric power plant.
