Spicy cod roe is Hakata’s major souvenir. Of all the numerous brands, “Gokofuku” will serve you Kofuku (happiness) in taste just as the name implies.
The name Gokofuku was chosen to replace Chinese characters for Gofuku (kimono, symbolic Japanese spirit) with Gofuku (five happiness) which means five good tastes of cod roe, soup stock, Mirin, sake, and red pepper. They are prepared with intricate details. Domestic flying fish, dried bonito from Kagoshima, Shiitake from Kyushu, etc. are gathered to create savory, spicy cod roe marinated in the rich original blend sauce.
Among their product lineup, the most unique is “Gokofuku Gonomi” with seasoned cod roe in a compact size which come in 10 different flavors such as red pepper, scallop, or basil olive - a rare set of Hakata souvenirs in an advanced-version.
