Izumo Hinomisaki Lighthouse
Japan’s tallest lighthouse in white.
The 43m-tall lighthouse stands on Cape Hino at the western edge of Shimane. 63m above sea level, this is Japan's tallest stone lighthouse. This large western-style lighthouse was selected into the IALA list of 100 lighthouses as historic and architectural monuments and 50 Best Lighthouses in Japan.
For the outer wall, stones cut out from the valley in Mihonoseki Town, Matsue City were used. The inside is made of bricks to form a doubly reinforced structure, where you can tour around. Climbing up 163 steps, you will reach the observation deck with a panoramic view over the Japan Sea and Ohashi Beach. On a sunny day, you can see Oki Islands to the north and Chugoku Mountains to the south.
The adjacent information room displays the lighthouse’s history, structure, its roll in graphics and diorama, and other valuable information.
The wild area around the lighthouse is made of lava eroded by ocean waves. Along the west coast, there is a path along a pine grove called Hakuryoen where you can see rare beach plants such as Hottentot fern and Asparagus rigidulus.
