About Shiseido, a Leading Company in the Cosmetics Industry
Shiseido, Japan’s flagship cosmetics company, was founded in 1872 in Ginza, Tokyo, as the first Western-style dispensing pharmacy in Japan. In 1897, it advanced into the cosmetics industry with “Eudermine,” known as “Shiseido red water,” that remains beloved to this day. Since then, it has continued to create the beauty of each era. It ranks No. 1* by sales among beauty companies originating in Japan and Asia, and is one of the largest cosmetics companies, with brands such as “SHISEIDO,” “Clé de Peau Beauté,” “ELIXIR,” “ANESSA,” and “MAQuillAGE.” Each of its wide-ranging brands has a clearly defined target segment, giving the company the strength to reach diverse customer groups.

Moreover, products created by Shiseido under the banner of “Art & Science” not only stimulate our aesthetic sensibilities through sophisticated packaging design but also incorporate cutting-edge science to deliver beauty grounded in evidence.
By pursuing the essence of beauty through the two pillars of “Art” and “Science,” the products and services that emerge are loved not only in Japan but also overseas. Starting with Taiwan in 1957, Shiseido began selling overseas; today, it has expanded globally, operating in approximately 120 countries and regions.
The corporate name “Shiseido” is said to derive from a passage in the Chinese Confucian classic Yi Jing (Book of Changes), the general meaning of which is: “How wonderful is the virtue of the earth, from which all things are born!” True to the spirit embedded in its name, Shiseido continues to lead Japan’s cosmetics industry, creating and releasing one after another new products packed with Shiseido’s independently researched cutting-edge technologies and insights.
A “Theme Park of Beauty” Is Born at Shiseido’s R&D Hub
These cutting-edge technologies are born in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture. In Yokohama Minato Mirai, where Shiseido’s research and development hub-the Shiseido Global Innovation Center-is located, the first and second floors-primarily the first-were renovated, and Shiseido Beauty Park opened in January 2025.

The facility sits just outside Exit 2 of Shin-Takashima Station on the Minatomirai Line, making it easy for anyone to casually drop in. Upon entering, what guides you through the building is the “Shiseido Karakusa” motif depicted at your feet. It is the iconic design often seen on Shiseido’s products and in its advertising. In front of you stretches a massive 16K screen, creating an airy interior.

The concept of this facility is: “Awaken the beauty within you with science connectiong the skin, body, and mind.” With Shiseido’s proprietary advanced science that elucidates human wholeness-the connection between skin, body, and mind-the company combines its strengths in dermatological science and sensory science with data science to comprehensively clarify the relationships among skin, body, and mind as part of an initiative called Beauty Artscape®. Each “Lab” offers a different experience

Shiseido Art & Science Lab: Beauty Retreat Theater
The first place to visit is the Beauty Retreat Theater. What you experience here is an immersive video that, incredibly, makes you more beautiful simply by watching it.

Same-day reservations are required for this experience. Upon arrival, we recommend reserving the special seats first.
AWE is the feeling you experience when faced with something so vast it is beyond comprehension-such as a sweeping, magnificent vista-that makes you realize the smallness of your own existence. Experiencing AWE causes changes in brain activity that suppress inflammation and make you more altruistic. It affects both body and mind, and has a wide range of positive effects on society itself.
Wondering what it means to become more beautiful simply by watching, you are guided to a plush single-seat armchair. Two seats are placed side by side. The cocoon-like design narrows your field of view, heightening immersion. In front of you stretches one of the world’s largest 16K screens (19.3 m × 5.4 m), installed on the first floor as a symbol of the facility. That alone is overwhelming, but then you’re given headphones. Once you put them on and adjust them, the noise-canceling function blocks out external sounds, drawing you deeper into the experience. With that, you are ready.

As you wait with excitement, the imagery on the massive 16K screen begins to move. On this day, you experience the summer AWE program. The huge screen shows a refreshing sea and sun. The camera then dives underwater, and large images of seaweed swaying with the waves make you feel like a small creature in the sea. Sunlight streams into the water and sparkles. As you feel soothed by the beautiful visuals, a pleasant fragrance drifts in. In fact, scents specially composed to match each of the four seasons are emitted from a box placed at your feet. This time, it was a refreshing citrus fragrance evocative of summer. Two types of fragrance are released several times during the roughly seven-minute video. With sight, hearing, and smell, you can fully immerse yourself in the experience. The seven minutes pass in a flash that makes you think, “It’s over already!” When it ends, you are filled with a sense of being overwhelmed by the beauty of nature, feeling its grandeur, and a clear state of mind. It was seven minutes that let you truly grasp what AWE means-something difficult to feel in everyday life.
This video applies Shiseido’s research in Kansei science, pursued for over 40 years-an objective, scientific approach to exploring people’s subjective senses and psychology. It was supervised by researchers at Shiseido and produced by the company’s creative team. Experiencing AWE reduces daily anxiety and stress, regulates the cardiovascular and immune systems, and enhances altruism, bringing positive effects to the mind, body, and society. Verification tests conducted during development showed that about 90% of participants rated their sense of awe higher than with comparative nature footage, suggesting that it contributes significantly to AWE.*
*Shiseido 2024 study: Among 51 men and women in their 20s-60s, 88.2% rated their sense of awe higher than with comparative nature footage.
But that is not all-this is where the content created by Shiseido, which upholds “Art & Science,” truly shines. It visualizes the mysterious similarities between human bodily beauty and the forms of nature so that it can also be appreciated as an art piece. For example, in the “Summer Radiance” video, the sunlight pouring into the vast summer sea turns into glittering, polygonal crystals that carry light down to the ocean floor. In human skin, the presence of subsurface scattering-light entering inside the skin-is known to be essential for a beautifully translucent look. The work links the light reaching into the skin with the crystal light reaching the seafloor. The video takes you on a journey from the macro landscapes of great nature to the micro world of the cells in our bodies, and then to the macro realm of the sublime. It is an experience emblematic of Shiseido’s Art & Science. One cannot help but be amazed that the company’s philosophy is also expressed through moving images. It is truly awe-inspiring.
There are four versions-spring, summer, autumn, and winter-which change with the seasons. Spring features imagery based on the blooming of cherry blossoms with a pink color scheme; summer is based on the sea and the sun with a bright blue color scheme; autumn is based on autumn leaves with a chic red color scheme; and winter is based on snowmelt with a white color scheme. Not only the imagery but also the fragrances released change with the season. It makes you curious about what the other seasons’ imagery and scents are like and eager to visit at other times of year.

Autumn video “Autumn Aging”

Winter video “Hydrating Winter”
AWE videos are shown every 30 minutes for about seven minutes, and the sound can be heard throughout the area, allowing you to experience them from anywhere the screen is visible. The special seats that offer a more immersive AWE experience require same-day reservations, so please note this in advance.
Try Products Packed with Cutting-Edge Technology at fibona Lab!
After resetting your mind and body with the video, head to fibona Lab on the first floor to try out products packed with cutting-edge technology.

With the themes of “Unprecedented, Co-creation, and Incomplete,” fibona Lab develops products by integrating Shiseido’s research expertise cultivated over more than 100 years with innovative technologies from startups and the unique ideas of consumers, constantly evolving. Within the Shiseido Global Innovation Center, which also houses Shiseido Beauty Park, many researchers are engaged in everything from basic research to new product development. At fibona Lab, you can try and purchase products created from the latest research results.
These are products not yet available at department stores or drugstores-items you can only obtain here. Both Shiseido researchers and consumers can try out innovative products unlike anything seen before, making fibona Lab a kind of test market. You can also observe how these products are manufactured in a laboratory-like production space adjacent to fibona Lab.

Through the glass-walled room, you can see rows of measuring instruments and microscope-like devices. Items manufactured here are sold directly at fibona Lab. On production days, you may even watch researchers at work, creating products before your eyes. At fibona Lab, you can hear product explanations from sales staff, and at times directly from the researchers who developed them.
The new products offered here are limited in quantity; sales end once they sell out, and the lineup is regularly refreshed.
Another distinctive feature of fibona Lab is the walls and boards filled with sticky notes. Visitors write down their impressions after using the displayed and sold products, posting them to provide feedback and requests to researchers.

Researchers then reflect this feedback in product refinements and enhancements, with the aim of contributing to future businesses as well. The new products born here are created collaboratively by researchers and consumers.
The fibona Lab space is designed under the concept of an “experimental playground” for consumers and researchers. The spatial theme changes significantly in line with the product concepts, creating a completely different atmosphere each season. Every visit offers a fresh and exciting experience, making fibona Lab a place you will want to return to again and again.
BEAUTY YAKUZEN: A New Dining Experience of Beauty and Health for the Skin, Body, and Mind
By the time you have toured the facility through the morning, it is just about lunchtime. When you feel hungry, head to Shiseido Kitchen Lab. This Lab features a soaring ceiling and a glass-walled, open space facing the main street. With abundant seating, it is an ideal place to enjoy a rewarding lunch with friends.

Applying Shiseido’s cutting-edge science that elucidates the connection between skin, body, and mind, Shiseido Kitchen Lab analyzes the causes of seasonal beauty concerns and provides a new dining experience that creates both beauty and health. Based on the philosophy of yakuzen (medicinal cuisine), which holds that food and medicine share the same origin, the menu incorporates seasonal ingredients to balance the body, combined with Shiseido’s proprietary science of the skin, body, and mind.
These menus are supervised not only by Shiseido researchers specializing in yakuzen but also by experts in cosmetics and food science. Drawing on their knowledge as well as advanced technology, they consider how to deliver the benefits of beauty “through food.”
Shiseido Kitchen Lab offers both year-round menus and seasonal menus that address specific beauty concerns arising in each season. The standard menu includes YAKUZEN curry - Four kinds of herbs & pork and Ginseng chicken soup with ginger, as well as three varieties of Yakuzen tea that can be selected according to your condition or mood, along with sweets and drinks.

The visually delightful YAKUZEN curry - Four kinds of herbs & pork uses an original blend of warming spices such as cinnamon and a special vinegar, finished lightly without wheat flour. Large pieces of pork add substance, while pickled red onion and daikon provide refreshing acidity and a crisp texture. The curry is accompanied by a mix of four herbs-perilla, mitsuba, dill, and mint-that promote circulation, creating a cool and refreshing flavor. It is a thoroughly satisfying dish.
The seasonal BEAUTY YAKUZEN Plate (choice of meat or fish) is designed to address seasonal beauty concerns-truly an embodiment of “beauty through food.” The set includes one main dish and four deli items, plus soup, rice, and a small cup of tea. A kids’ plate is also available.
When you visit, it may be the monthly summer menu. In summer, many people experience bodily concerns such as fatigue and swelling, while skin concerns often include sunburn from strong UV rays and visible pores due to increased sebum and perspiration. The seasonal BEAUTY YAKUZEN menu offered at this Lab addresses these seasonal body and skin issues with foods and sweets that incorporate both Shiseido’s science and the wisdom of yakuzen. The summer menu focuses on ingredients that clear heat from the body’s surface and upper body and those that regulate fluids to circulate water where it is needed. Aromatic herbs that promote circulation are also incorporated, helping to counter stagnation caused by the difference between indoor and outdoor temperatures. All menus are supervised by Shiseido researchers specializing in yakuzen, ensuring well-considered and reliable dishes.
Here is the plate we actually had.

It uses seasonal swordfish rich in B, D, and E vitamins and iron, which help restore summer-tired skin. A checca sauce with a sweet-and-sour flavor whets the appetite, giving it a Mediterranean touch. Mint and capers play the role of promoting circulation, adding a refreshing accent.
The four deli items in small bowls also change with the seasons. When we visited, they were “Eel and Avocado with Fragrant Cucumber Dressing,” “Simmered Winter Melon in Jade Broth,” “Jujube & Goji Berry Râpée,” and “Circulation-Boosting Fruit and Vegetable Salad.” The eel-and-avocado dish includes avocado, said to moisten the intestines; the winter-melon dish uses winter melon, considered good for summer heat and swelling; the jujube-and-goji râpée features carrot, honey, and ginger-ingredients pleasing to the body in yakuzen; and the fruit-and-vegetable salad uses watermelon, expected to have diuretic effects. It is a generously portioned plate lunch devised with summer-worn skin and body foremost in mind. The small cup of tea is served hot: by drinking warm tea before eating, they aim to activate stomach function and promote digestion. The tea is rich in spice-derived components, which are said to promote circulation and support skin turnover and damage recovery.
In this Lab, you can also make café-only visits just for tea. There are three types of Yakuzen tea: “Yakuzen Tea COOL,” “Yakuzen Tea RELAX,” and “Yakuzen Tea WARM.” You can choose whichever flavor interests you, or select based on your physical condition that day.

“Yakuzen Tea COOL” blends pan-fired green tea with the cool aromas of lemongrass and peppermint to refresh bodies with pent-up summer heat. “Yakuzen Tea RELAX” is based on green rooibos and hatomugi (Job’s tears) tea, with soothing aromas of chamomile and lavender blended in. The faint sweetness comes from licorice. It is a comforting, reassuring Yakuzen Tea. “Yakuzen Tea WARM” is based on black tea, with gentle aromas of ginger and cinnamon. A peppery aftertaste remains, making you feel warmed from your core.
There are also sweets that pair perfectly with tea, both standard and seasonal, so be sure to try them. Of course, you can also casually use just this Lab at lunchtime.
For details-including seasonal offerings-see the menus below.
Shiseido Beauty Diagnosis Lab Where You Can Receive a Beauty Checkup
Beyond the model course, you can also book a Beauty Checkup-a service available only at a research institute that embodies Art & Science. In a Lab where Shiseido’s advanced science connecting skin, body, and mind merges with a luxurious space, you will spend three hours in an exclusive program. This is an advance-reservation-only service.
At this Lab, 13 types of measurements are conducted to assess the state of your skin, body, and mind. Your results are explained directly by an active Shiseido researcher. It is a rare opportunity to hear from researchers who regularly publish cutting-edge findings. Measurements include not only your skin, but also the structure of your nose (formed early in fetal development and said to reveal the innate qualities of your skin), your gait (reflecting muscle condition), and other aspects of the body, as well as mind-related measurements that engage your sensibilities through tea and fragrance. Leveraging over a century of Shiseido data, the program identifies 144 patterns that describe the connections among skin, body, and mind, and provides insight into your likely skin tendencies three years into the future and beyond.

One of the great strengths of this experience is that you receive advice on beauty habits, lifestyle habits, and nutrition based on scientific evidence and objective assessment, helping you understand both the strengths and weaknesses of your skin, body, and mind. Based on these results, a Beauty Artscape advisor will provide an approximately 20-minute personalized treatment for the face and décolleté. In addition, you can enjoy Shiseido Bliss Balls-sphere-shaped sweets made with nuts and dried fruits based on nutritional science-together with Yakuzen Tea at the Shiseido Kitchen Lab. You will also select a fragrance that resonates with you and, in the Beauty Retreat Theater, experience a visual program that makes you more beautiful simply by watching. Together, these form part of the Awakening Beauty Experience, creating a thoroughly fulfilling program. This Beauty Checkup is currently available in Japanese only.
To participate, register on the Shiseido Beauty Diagnosis Lab My Page and then make a reservation.
The required time is approximately three hours, and the fee is 30,000 yen (tax included).
