This is one of the Kaga onsen resorts, which spreads by Lake Shibayama overlooking Mt. Hakusan. Take in the lake view which is said to change colors seven times each day, while soaking in a hot spring or strolling the lake shore.
In the neighborhood, there are Ukimido Temple (Ukiuki Benten) in the lake associated with the Katayamazu folklore of a dragon god and a girl, Hanayakata which was used for geisha’ practice of dance and shamisen banjo, Aizenji Temple (Oyakushi san) and other attractions. The Museum of Snow and Ice commemorates Ukichiro Nakaya, the scientist who invented artificial snow for the first time in the world, where you can try making an ice pendant.
The glass building by the lake is Katayamazu Onsen Soyu, where you can soak in the hot spring and view the panorama. They have a cafe with an open terrace. Sunahase Park is at the center of the resort, where you can rest in the free foot bath.
Boat rides and cycling are available and crafts such as Akiko Dye and Mizuhiki are popular. Throughout August, fireworks are performed over the lake, painting up flowers in the night sky. From late October to early March, you can see graceful Tundra Swans overwintering around Lake Shibayama.
