Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute – Tama Forest Science Garden

Located in Takao, Hachioji City, Tokyo, this research facility focuses on the ecology of plants and animals. It consists of the Forest Science Museum, which introduces research activities; the Arboretum, where around 500 tree species can be observed; and the Cherry Tree Preservation Forest, spanning about 8 hectares.

The highlight is the Cherry Tree Preservation Forest, home to Japan’s largest collection of cultivated cherry varieties. Around 1,800 trees are planted here, including varieties handed down since the Edo period and clones of cherry trees designated as national natural monuments. The forest plays a vital role in preserving the genetic diversity of cherry trees. Blooming periods vary by species, so visitors can enjoy blossoms from late February through late April. The 7-hectare Arboretum features about 500 tree species, along with designated spots such as the Flying Squirrel Point and Wild Bird Observation Point, where lucky visitors may encounter local wildlife. In total, around 15 species of mammals inhabit the garden, offering rich opportunities for nature observation.
