Mount Tarumae

Located about an hour from Hokkaido’s gateway, New Chitose Airport, Mount Tarumae is an active volcano standing 1,041 meters tall. Its most distinctive feature is its pudding-shaped lava dome, and it is known as one of Japan’s rare triple-type volcanoes. Situated in southwestern Hokkaido within Shikotsu-Toya National Park-often called a “living volcano museum”-it is also a popular destination for hikers seeking a true mountain experience.

From central Tomakomai, it takes about 40 minutes by car to reach the 7th Station Hut, where a short 10-minute walk from the parking lot leads to a scenic viewpoint overlooking the stunningly blue Lake Shikotsu, one of Japan’s clearest lakes. It’s an excellent option even for those visiting by car.

Well-maintained trails lead from the 7th Station Hut to the summit of Higashi-yama, taking about 50 minutes. Along the way, hikers can enjoy alpine plants and, at the summit, sweeping views of the dramatic volcanic landscape. Because Mount Tarumae is an active volcano, certain areas are restricted due to volcanic gases, so visitors should pay attention to safety notices.
