Believed to have been opened in 808 by the Buddhist monk Kobo Daishi, Yumura Onsen boasts a history of more than 1,200 years. Historical records note that the famed Sengoku warlord Takeda Shingen often visited this hot spring to heal his battle fatigue and wounds.

The hot spring town features a variety of accommodations, from hotels with beautiful Japanese gardens to long-established ryokan inns. Guests receive a Yumeguri Tegata (hot spring pass), which allows entry to other inns’ baths (additional bathing fee required). Take advantage of this system to enjoy the unique atmosphere of different baths at a leisurely pace. Free rental bicycles are also available for overnight guests (advance reservation required), making hot spring hopping even easier.

Nearby sightseeing spots include Shiozawadera, affectionately known by locals as “Yakujizo-san”; Shosenkyo Gorge, designated a National Place of Scenic Beauty and renowned as “Japan’s most beautiful gorge”; and Takeda Shrine, dedicated to Takeda Shingen and revered for granting success in competitions. Yumura Onsen makes a perfect base for exploring these attractions while enjoying the healing waters.
