Kaizu Osaki

A renowned cherry blossom viewing spot and one of the Eight Scenic Views of Lake Biwa.

Last update :

Located on the northern shore of Lake Biwa in Takashima City’s Makino area, Kaizu Osaki is a rocky lakeside stretch renowned for its scenic beauty and listed as one of the Eight Scenic Views of Lake Biwa. It is especially famous as a cherry blossom viewing spot.

Roughly 800 Somei Yoshino cherry trees line the 4-kilometer stretch of rugged shoreline, growing out of rocky formations shaped by wave erosion. In spring, both newly planted saplings and grand trees over 80 years old burst into bloom, creating a stunning floral tunnel along the lake.

The contrast between the pale pink blossoms, the deep blue of Lake Biwa, the mystical rock formations, and the distant view of Chikubu Island creates an almost otherworldly scene. There's even a tale of a famed artist who was so captivated by the sight that he paused mid-painting to simply admire the view. It’s no surprise that the area draws large crowds of hanami (cherry blossom viewing) visitors every year.

Kaizu Osaki is also known for its late-blooming cherry blossoms—usually blooming about a week later than those in Kyoto—making it an ideal destination even after the sakura season has passed in other regions.

The area is also popular as a driving and cycling route, with well-maintained nature trails that make for a pleasant stroll year-round.
