Daiosaki Lighthouse
One of the “Climbable Lighthouses 16,” with spectacular 360-degree views.
A white lighthouse standing at the tip of a cliff on the Pacific Ocean, where rough waves crash in on the southeastern Shima Peninsula in Mie Prefecture. It is one of Japan’s 16 existing “Climbable Lighthouses.” The surrounding waters were once a hazardous area with scattered reefs and hidden rocks that caused many shipwrecks, so it was completed in 1927 as a navigational beacon to help vessels sail safely.
Climb the stairs to the top for a sweeping 360-degree panorama, with Yoneko Beach and Mugisaki Lighthouse to the southwest and Anorisaki Lighthouse to the north. Below, you can look out over the historic streets of Daio, and watching a ship’s mast slowly appear beyond the horizon really brings home the curve of the Earth.
The on-site lighthouse museum displays valuable items such as lenses from the time it was built. Lighthouse models and dioramas also explain the lighthouse’s role in an easy-to-understand way.
Daio Town is known as a “town of painters,” as many artists visit for its peaceful, beautiful scenery centered around the lighthouse. A stroll through town is also recommended, and you can enjoy views of the lighthouse with the sea and sunrise as a backdrop.
