Lake Yogo
Take a refreshing break at a lake with a mirror-like beauty.
Lake Yogo in Shiga Prefecture is known for its beautiful, mirror-like surface. Located in northern Lake Biwa, its calm waters and mysterious atmosphere have earned it the nickname “Mirror Lake.” On a still day, the stunning reflections of the sky and surrounding mountains feel almost mesmerizing. It’s also been selected as one of the Kohoku Eight Views, a must-see scenic set in the northern Lake Biwa area.
Long loved by locals, the lake is also closely tied to a number of cultural traditions. It’s well known as a place where mystical stories have been passed down, including the “Hagoromo (Feather Robe) Legend” about a celestial maiden and the “Kikuishi-hime Legend” related to praying for rain. Along the lakeshore, you’ll find scattered haiku monuments written by poets such as Seishi Yamaguchi and Michi Saitobe, who visited and were moved by the beautiful scenery.
Another highlight is the beautiful scenery throughout the seasons. In spring, rows of cherry blossoms color the lakeshore, and in early summer, hydrangeas bloom in full, making it perfect for a refreshing ride along the cycling route or a stroll on the well-maintained walking paths. In winter, smelt fishing is popular. There are also nearby places where you can enjoy freshly caught smelt as tempura, so be sure to try it.
