Hahajima Island

A World Heritage island teeming with rare wildlife and otherworldly natural scenery.

Last update :

Part of the Ogasawara Islands, a designated UNESCO World Natural Heritage site, Hahajima is located about 1,050 km south-southeast of Tokyo. Among the roughly 30 islands in the archipelago, it is the southernmost island accessible via regular ferry service.
Getting there is an adventure in itself: first, a 24-hour ferry ride from Tokyo takes you to Chichi-jima (Father Island), followed by a two-hour boat ride to Hahajima. Boats from Chichi-jima run 4 to 5 times a week and cannot be reserved in advance, making access somewhat limited—but the rewards are well worth it. The island is home to rare species and breathtaking landscapes found nowhere else.

On Mount Chibusa, visitors can see endemic plant species such as Hahajima-nobotan and Wadanoki, and may even spot the Bonin Honeyeater (Meguro), a nationally protected bird species. The view from the summit includes a sweeping panorama all the way to Chichi-jima—a truly spectacular sight.
With postcard-perfect views at every turn, Hahajima offers an unforgettable escape into nature and heritage. Some areas require a licensed guide for entry, so be sure to plan accordingly when exploring.
