Sakai City Museum
A museum introducing Sakai, a historic city, from ancient times to the present day.
A comprehensive museum in Daisen Park, which spreads out between the Nintoku-Tenno-Ryo Tumulus (Daisen Kofun) and the Richu-Tenno-Ryo Tumulus (Misan-zai Kofun). It collects and exhibits a wide range of materials, including archaeology, art, and folklore, and introduces the history and culture of Sakai City.
The permanent exhibition is divided into four periods, including ancient times, when the World Heritage “Mozu-Furuichi Kofun Group,” represented by the Nintoku-Tenno-Ryo Tumulus, was built, and the medieval period, when the city prospered through firearm production and trade. In the ancient section, reconstructions are on display, including the stone burial chamber discovered at the Nintoku-Tenno-Ryo Tumulus, the stone coffin placed inside it, and horse-shaped haniwa clay figures. In addition, special and themed exhibitions are held regularly to explore topics in greater depth, complementing the permanent exhibition.
The “Mozu Kofun Group Theater,” which screens a video of the Nintoku-Tenno-Ryo Tumulus recreated with precise CG—including its appearance at the time of construction and the inside of the stone chamber—on an Approx. 200-inch large screen, is popular for its lifelike sense of presence and immersion.
