Nemuro City Shunkunitai Wild Bird Sanctuary Nature Center
A hub for observation and learning, where you can get to know Shunkunitai’s nature and wild birds in depth.
Shunkunitai is a Approx. 8-kilometer-long sandbar with a rich natural environment and is registered under the Ramsar Convention. The Nemuro City Shunkunitai Wild Bird Sanctuary Nature Center was established to protect and introduce Shunkunitai’s natural environment, a treasure trove of wild birds and other wildlife.
The center has on-site nature specialists called rangers, who explain Shunkunitai and the surrounding area’s natural environment, as well as the plants and animals you can observe. It also provides detailed information on five nature trails developed in Shunkunitai and the Higashiume Nature Learning Forest, so it’s recommended to stop by the center before actually walking the courses. Binoculars, field guides, rubber boots, and bear bells are also available to rent.
There are also telescopes inside, allowing birdwatching from within the center. You can observe the ecology of a wide variety of birds, including red-crowned cranes, white-tailed eagles, and various species of sandpipers and plovers.
