Mizuma-Kannon Station
Don’t miss this charming retro station building, a nationally registered tangible cultural property.
The terminal station of the Mizuma Railway, located in Kaizuka City, Osaka Prefecture. Built in 1926, the station building was inspired by the tahoto pagoda of Mizumadera Temple. It is a nationally registered tangible cultural property and was also selected as one of the Kinki Region’s 100 Best Stations in 2000. Another notable feature is its reinforced concrete construction, which was unusual for the time.
The platform columns reuse rails purchased from Carnegie Steel, a predecessor of the American steel company U.S. Steel, made in 1898. In 2018, the station was renovated as the “Kokedama Station,” with Approx. 1,000 kokedama moss balls placed throughout the station under the concept of “seeking no luxury like moss, never losing beauty, and steadfastly protecting the railway line.” The entire station has become a forest-like spot.
Also worth seeing is the waiting room “Machi-ai Cafe,” which served as a setting for the YouTube drama “Our Home,” starring actor Ken Matsudaira and produced with funds raised through crowdfunding.
