Kuicha Festival
A cultural event unique to Miyakojima, held as a celebration of the island’s identity and heritage-an expression of what makes Miyakojima truly Miyakojima.
Held annually in Miyakojima City, Okinawa, this festival celebrates the island’s rich traditional culture. Kuicha is a folk dance unique to Miyakojima, said to derive its name from the local dialect-kui meaning “voice” and cha meaning “to bring together.” Open to everyone regardless of age or setting, it is a communal dance that anyone can join. In 2002, Kuicha was designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan. The dance typically begins spontaneously with clapping, joined by singing, as participants form a circle, swing their arms up and down, and leap powerfully as if stamping the earth-a dynamic and energetic style that defines Kuicha.
At the Kuicha Festival, preservation groups from across the island and younger-generation teams take part, allowing visitors to compare regional variations in melodies and dance styles. Alongside performances that faithfully carry on ancient traditions, the festival also features a creative category showcasing modern interpretations-another major highlight.
In some years, tables are set up in the audience area, making it possible to enjoy food and drinks while watching the Kuicha performances.
