Kintaikyo Bridge Cormorant Fishing
A summer-only experience watching traditional cormorant fishing from a boat.
A signature summer tradition in Iwakuni, this experience takes place on the Nishiki River in Iwakuni City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, where you board a traditional yakatabune boat to watch ukai, or cormorant fishing. Ukai is a traditional Japanese fishing method in which trained cormorants, controlled with cords tied around their necks, catch river fish. You can watch the cormorant master guide the birds with hand ropes as they catch sweetfish from so close it feels almost within reach. The sight of bonfires flickering on the river in time with the movements of the birds and their master is magical and full of atmosphere. Another unique appeal of this experience is enjoying ukai with the famous Kintaikyo Bridge in view.
The operating period is every year from June 1 to September 10, and the experience runs from 7:00pm to 9:00pm for Approx. 2 hours. You can sit back and enjoy the view from the boat, and boxed meals from long-established local restaurants are available to order for an additional fee. With dinner and the river breeze, it is also a perfect way to wrap up a day of sightseeing in Iwakuni.
Operations may be canceled depending on the weather or rising river levels, so be sure to check the operating status in advance on the day of your visit.
