The Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum primarily features dinosaur-related information and materials, and it is one of the largest museums in Japan!
Many teeth, bones, footprints, and other relics from a variety of vertebrate animals, including dinosaurs, have been found in Katsuyama City.
Because of this, the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum opened in 2000, and it sees around 1 million visitors most years.

The exhibition room inside of the silver dome is split up into three zones: “The World of Dinosaurs,” “Earth Science,” and “The History of Life.”
Among the three zones, the real must-see is “The World of Dinosaurs.” Within the huge space, measuring 84 meters long, 55 meters wide, and 37.5 meters high, the skeletons of 43 dinosaurs are on display, looking as if they are ready to come back to life.
In addition, the space features over 1000 amazing specimens, a large model reconstruction diorama, various images, and more.

The Outdoor Dinosaur Museum, accessible by private bus from the Dinosaur Museum, features a site where visitors can watch up-close as dinosaur fossils are excavated, or even participate in excavation themselves by striking the stones brought up from the excavation site.

Children, adults, and even researchers can all enjoy what the museum has to offer!

Highlights

  • Many valuable authentic dinosaur fossils and realistic models are on display.
  • There is also a restaurant within the museum, featuring a variety of dishes with dinosaur-themed names.
  • The museum is located on the site of the “Katsuyama Dinosaur Forest,” a park with many dinosaur-themed playsets.
