Last update :

This museum stands at the heart of Seaside Momochi District. To the north, there is Fukuoka Tower, to the east across the river, Fukuoka PayPay Dome. The museum is in a tourist spot, born in 1990 to study and share the area’s history and folk cultures.

Under the theme of “FUKUOKA, the City and People in Asia,” the permanent exhibition shares Fukuoka’s history and folk life. There are 11 sections, the 1st of which displays the national treasure gold seal, Kanno Wano Nano Kokuo In. A Chinese chronicle, “the History of the Later Han Dynasty,” mentions Emperor Guangwu of the later Han period gave a seal and a cordon in 57 A.D. to the envoy from Na, a country which is said to have existed around Hakata Coast - current Fukuoka City. The following 10 categories exhibit Fukuoka’s history and lifestyles of people in different periods.

The theme of the 11th section is Hakata Gion Yamakasa. The float especially made for the museum, Gunshi Kanbei no Sho, is at the center and paintings from Edo Period, a diorama depicting life in Meiji Period, etc. are on display.

Also, there are toys, musical instruments, clothing and household goods from Asian countries you can see at the Touch & Experience Room (Mitaiken Lab), as well as a shop and a cafe.
