Yobuko has long been known as one of the important port towns in Japan. The Yobuko morning market has been in operation since the Taisho period and is one of Japan’s three major morning markets, along with Wajima in Ishikawa Prefecture and Takayama in Gifu Prefecture.
Nearly 50 stalls line up from 7:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on the 200-meter morning market street right next to Yobuko Port, and the sight is amazing! The atmosphere is lively, with homemade dried squid, dried fish, fresh vegetables and fruits, and other items lined up in fish boxes, and the energetic store ladies calling out to the customers. The market is always bustling with locals and tourists because of the freshly caught seafood at reasonable prices.
Asking for recommendations or negotiating prices, the conversations with store ladies are a great attraction of the morning market. While eating freshly made hot squid dumplings, tempura, pressed squid crackers, and so on, pick up plenty of Yobuko delicacies to take home with you. Some stores even have a charcoal grill where you can cook and eat the seafood you just purchased.
