Last update :

A Japanese garden just south of the Tokyo Marriott Hotel, preserving the charm of Gotenyama, once famed in the Edo period for cherry blossoms and autumn foliage and featured in ukiyo-e prints.

The name “Gotenyama” comes from the “Shinagawa Palace,” where Tokugawa Ieyasu and other Edo shoguns rested during falconry outings. Long ago, this was a coastal hill with views over Tokyo Bay, and in the time of Tokugawa Yoshimune it was also known as a popular cherry blossom spot. Today, the area is part of the mixed-use complex Gotenyama Trust City, with hotels, offices, and residences.

Covering Approx. 2,000 tsubo, the spacious grounds are open for anyone to stroll freely. Enjoy seasonal blooms such as plum and cherry blossoms in spring, hydrangeas in early summer, autumn leaves in fall, and winter camellias in winter. The garden also features the teahouse Ujian, designed by architect Arata Isozaki, and the Tokyo Marriott Hotel chapel, The Forest, adding to Gotenyama’s seasonal events.

  • The sound of the water, the waterfall, and the roar of the trains all blend together, and it doesn’t really match the beautiful garden.

If you work nearby, having a green oasis like this garden must feel like such a treat.
