Ishikawa Prefectural Museum of Art
An art museum exhibiting treasures from the Maeda family and various works connected to Ishikawa Prefecture, arranged thematically.
The Ishikawa Prefectural Museum of Art showcases numerous treasures handed down from the Maeda family of the Kaga Domain, as well as works by artists connected to Ishikawa Prefecture. Originally opened in 1958 at the current site of the Ishikawa Prefectural Museum of Traditional Arts and Crafts, it relocated in 1983 to accommodate larger, more diverse exhibitions.
The museum consists of nine exhibition rooms (Rooms 1 through 9), which display a rotating selection from over 3,900 works in its collection, ranging from ancient art to modern paintings, sculptures, and crafts. Visitors can enjoy encountering new artworks with each visit. A particular highlight is Exhibition Room 1, which permanently displays vibrant ceramic masterpieces by the renowned Edo-period potter Nonomura Ninsei: the national treasure "Incense burner in the shape of pheasant decorated with overglaze enamels." and the important cultural property "Incense burner in the shape of female pheasant decorated with overglaze enamels".
Additionally, the mezzanine-level entrance hall features a café produced by internationally acclaimed pastry chef Hironobu Tsujiguchi, who hails from Nanao City in Ishikawa Prefecture. Visitors can pause during their museum tour to enjoy exquisite, professionally crafted desserts.
