Omihachiman Canal Boat Tour
Enjoy a relaxing boat ride through atmospheric canals once favored by legendary samurai.
Omihachiman traces its origins back to when Toyotomi Hideyoshi ordered his nephew Hidetsugu to build Hachimanyama Castle as the center of Omi Province, replacing Azuchi Castle. By diverting boats traveling on Lake Biwa into Hachiman-bori Canal—originally the castle's moat—the area flourished economically, eventually becoming the birthplace of the prosperous Omi merchants.
The Omihachiman Canal Boat Tour began roughly 400 years ago, inspired by the elegant boat parties held in the imperial court, during which Hidetsugu organized poetry gatherings aboard boats. Today, skilled boatmen gently guide boats through picturesque waterways, using traditional oars and poles.
Tours are available as either chartered private boats (reservation required) or shared rides (no reservation needed). Chartered tours offer three courses: a standard 80-minute route, an extended 120-minute route, and a shorter 60-minute Kawara-bori Canal route. Bento lunches and drinks are also available as optional add-ons. The signature Omi beef sukiyaki, enjoyed aboard a gently drifting boat, is especially popular for its memorable taste and unique experience. Shared boats operate only on the standard route and are unavailable during winter months (December to March).
