Himure Hachimangu Shrine

Himure Hachimangu Shrine in Omihachiman, Shiga Prefecture, has a history of Approx. 1,800 years. It has long been worshiped as a local guardian deity believed to bring protection from misfortune and prosperity in business. Said to be the origin of the name Omihachiman, it remains a special presence for local residents.

As you pass through the 8.8-meter-tall wooden torii gate, an ornate two-story gate tower with intricate, refined design comes into view. Beyond it stands the main sanctuary, with an elegant presence and a copper-sheet roof. The grounds also feature a Noh stage and scattered small shrines enshrining various deities, making it full of things to see.

Various Shinto rituals are held throughout the year, with Sagicho Festival and Hachiman Festival especially well known. In March, Sagicho Festival features triangular straw torches topped with bamboo and decorated with “dashi,” ornaments centered on that year’s zodiac sign, then carried like portable shrines as they parade through town. The festivities culminate in a bold ritual fire offering at the shrine. It’s said that Sengoku-era warlord Oda Nobunaga also loved this festival. In April, Hachiman Festival is a sacred event with a history of over 1,000 years, said to have originated from guiding Emperor Ojin with torches. The solemn festival combines the flames of over 200 torches of various sizes, including giant torches over 10 meters tall, with the resonant sound of large taiko drums. Both festivals were selected as National Intangible Folk Cultural Properties in 1992.
