Ekoin
A temple lodging offering a wide range of unique shukubo experiences.
Located just steps from the Ichinohashi entrance to Okunoin, where Kobo Daishi rests, Ekoin is a temple lodging with deep historical roots. It is said to have earned its name, meaning “Temple of Memorial Offerings,” after Dosho Sozu, a disciple of Kobo Daishi, became its abbot and dedicated himself to memorial services for many people. While honoring tradition and history, the temple also offers modern amenities such as Wi-Fi.
Guests are welcome to freely join the morning gongyo (Buddhist services with sutra chanting and memorial offerings) or goma kito, a fire ritual in which offerings are burned to carry their essence to the heavens. They can also participate in Ajikan, a form of meditation in esoteric Buddhism, or practice shakyo (sutra copying), both available at no additional cost. Another popular activity is the Okunoin Night Tour (organized by Awesome Tours), which allows participants to experience the solemn, mystical atmosphere of Okunoin after dark.
Meals feature furumai ryori, a style of banquet cuisine traditionally served after ceremonies on Mount Koya. The shojin ryori incorporates plenty of vegetables, beans, and mountain plants, offering a healthy yet deeply satisfying dining experience in an authentic temple setting.
