Onioshidashi Park

A striking natural wonder where lava from Mount Asama’s great eruption created a uniquely rugged landscape, complemented by beautiful alpine plants.

Last update :

Located within Joshin’etsu Kogen National Park and the northern foothills of the Asama Volcano Geopark, Onioshidashi Park is a remarkable natural wonder shaped entirely by volcanic activity. During Mount Asama’s massive eruption in 1783, lava flowed across the area and solidified into rugged, block-like formations that now blanket the landscape, creating its striking scenery.

At an elevation of around 1,300 meters, the park comes alive with alpine flora starting in mid-May, when species such as Togoku Mitsuba Tsutsuji azaleas and Iwakagami bloom between the lava rocks. In autumn, from late September to late October, the foliage transforms the lava field with vibrant reds and yellows, offering a stunning contrast. Multiple walking trails wind through the lava formations, allowing visitors to choose routes of varying lengths-approximately 30 to 60 minutes-depending on their stamina and interest.

At the park’s center, on an elevated area, stands Asama Kannon-dō, a branch temple of Tokyo’s Kaneiji, built to honor those who perished in the eruption. From the temple’s stage, visitors can enjoy sweeping panoramic views of the vast lava fields with Mount Asama and Mount Shirane rising beyond them-an unforgettable sight. Near the entrance, there is a restaurant and gift shop, and a teahouse located near the temple offers a place to relax with items like protective charm dumplings and sweet amazake.
