Hotokegaura Sea Sightseeing

Approx. 1.2 miles (2 km) of unusual rock formations line Hotokegaura, a hidden gem on the Shimokita Peninsula. Carved from tuff by wind, rain, and waves, these strangely shaped rocks hardly seem like natural creations, creating a dreamy, otherworldly landscape that feels like the Buddhist Pure Land. The perfect way to sightsee Hotokegaura is with the “Hotokegaura Sea Sightseeing” cruise boat.

You can reach Hotokegaura on foot, but since the route includes a steep path with a 328 ft (100 m) elevation change, exploring by boat is recommended. After enjoying sweeping views of Hotokegaura from the cruise boat departing Sai Port, you’ll dock and stroll while viewing the unique rock formations up close. Also, from around May to July, if you’re lucky, you may even spot dolphins from the boat.

The cruise takes around 1 hour 30 minutes in total: 30 minutes outbound to Hotokegaura, 30 minutes to walk around Hotokegaura, and 30 minutes for the return to Sai. The operating season is from late April to October, and service runs daily during this period regardless of rain. However, cruises may be canceled when waves are high, so be sure to check service updates on the official website on the morning of your visit.
