Tateyama Onsen
A seaside hot spring resort to unwind with ocean-view open-air baths and seasonal seafood cuisine.
A hot spring town facing Tateyama Bay at the southern tip of the Boso Peninsula, popular as a seaside resort thanks to well-equipped swimming beaches and marine activities, plus easy access from the Tokyo metropolitan area. Though it first opened in the 2000s, making it relatively new among hot spring destinations, it has gained attention for its mild climate with little snowfall even in winter and its beautiful views.
The spring quality varies by facility, but it is a colorless, clear, odorless bicarbonate spring or sodium chloride spring. Known as a “beauty bath,” fine bubbles envelop the body for a smooth, silky feel on the skin.
There’s a wide range of places to stay, from traditional Japanese inns and resort hotels to designer ryokan. If you’d like to travel with your dog, pet-friendly hotels are a great option. Many large communal baths and in-room open-air baths come with ocean views, and some even look out over stunning sunsets and Mt. Fuji. Some facilities also offer day-use bathing. Dinner, of course, highlights fresh seasonal seafood caught locally. Be sure to enjoy each property’s creative dishes, from boat platters of sashimi to simmered fish and tempura.
