Oyashirazu Coast

A dramatic, nature-made landscape where the Sea of Japan meets sheer cliffs.

Along a 10 km stretch, the rough waves of the Sea of Japan have carved steep cliffs—once feared as “Tenka no Ken,” a notorious danger spot that blocked travelers’ way. Until the Meiji period, it was an extremely hazardous route that required passing right along the water’s edge. The name “Oyashirazu-Koshirazu” (“Parents don’t know, children don’t know”) is also said to come from the way people had to dash through the narrow strip of shoreline, leaving parents no room to think of their children, and children no room to look back for their parents.

Today, the route has been improved so visitors can take in the powerful natural beauty created by the majestic Sea of Japan and sheer cliffs. The view at dusk is especially breathtaking. This dramatic scenery is sure to become an unforgettable travel memory. In summer, the area gets lively as a swimming beach, so consider bringing a swimsuit.

Nearby is Roadside Station Oyashirazu Pier Park, where you can try the local specialty cod soup as well as monkfish soup (winter only). Fresh local seafood is also sold there, making it a convenient stop for picking up souvenirs.
