Yosuien Garden
Traditional beauty woven from nature and history-feel the changing seasons in a daimyo garden.
This spacious, Approx. 33,000-square-meter garden is also well-known as a filming location for period dramas. It was created by order of Lord Tokugawa Harutomi, a feudal lord of the former Kishu Tokugawa clan, and even after nearly 200 years, the atmosphere of the old days remains throughout.
Making the most of its seaside-adjacent location, the pond takes in seawater—a distinctive feature. Thanks to this, the pond is home mainly to fish species such as eel and goby that live at the boundary between the sea and rivers, letting you experience the richness of the natural environment up close. “Shugoshin Island,” a sacred area floating in the pond and accessed by crossing a bridge, enshrines an Inari shrine and a Benten shrine. Stop by as you stroll around the garden, bring your hands together in prayer, and receive their blessings.
Also worth noting is that it features not only flowers such as Japanese iris, iris, hydrangea, and camellia, but also impressive pines—Approx. 1,100 trees in total. While maintaining the delicacy of a design created to also be enjoyed with tea ceremony, the bold layout centered on majestic pines is a hallmark of a daimyo garden.
