Furepe Falls
A waterfall also known as “Maiden’s Tears,” gently streaming down a sheer cliff.
This waterfall is counted as one of the Shiretoko Eight Views and is located about a 20-minute walk along the trail from the Shiretoko Nature Center. The water pours down through a crack in an Approx. 100 m cliff, with no river flowing into it, created as snow and rain that fell on the Shiretoko mountain range seeped underground. Because it trickles down into the sea like tears, it is also called “Maiden’s Tears.”
From the trail, you can enjoy Shiretoko’s signature scenery, including wide-open grasslands, a sweeping panorama of the Shiretoko mountain range, and mixed forests of conifers and broadleaf trees. Many wild animals live in the area, so you may also encounter wild birds and Ezo deer. Brown bears may appear as well, so be sure to stay alert.
From the observation deck overlooking the falls, you can take in the Sea of Okhotsk and the Shiretoko mountain range at the same time. Be sure to enjoy the seasonal scenery as well, from fresh spring greenery to autumn leaves and winters wrapped in snow. If you visit in winter when snow has piled up, joining a guided tour is recommended.
