Shiretoko Five Lakes

Shiretoko Five Lakes are nestled within a primeval forest, set against the backdrop of the Shiretoko Mountain Range. Located in the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site of Shiretoko, the breathtaking scenery is recognized as one of the Shiretoko Eight Sights. The area is home to abundant wildlife, including Ezo squirrels and deer, which often make appearances. However, caution is advised as brown bears also inhabit the region.

Two walking trails offer different ways to experience the lakes. The Elevated Wooden Path, approximately 800 meters long, leads to the shores of the first lake and provides a safe path for visitors throughout the season. A visit here brings the chance to feast your eyes on spectacular views of the Shiretoko Mountain Range reflected in the lake and the distant Sea of Okhotsk. The Ground Pathways, on the other hand, allows for a more immersive experience of nature. It includes two loops: a large loop that explores all five lakes and a smaller loop around the first and second lakes. Access and fees for these trails vary by season.

Seasonal highlights include skunk cabbage and Ezo blue poppies blooming in early summer, vibrant autumn foliage, and unique winter landscapes. In winter, guided tours allow visitors to walk across wetlands and frozen lakes, offering experiences not available during the summer months.
