Beppu City Bamboo Craft Traditional Industry Hall

The beauty of bamboo, shaped by master craftsmanship. A moment to experience the inspiration of Beppu Bamboo Crafts.

Last update :

A museum that shares the beauty of “Beppu Bamboo Crafts,” the only traditional craft in Oita Prefecture officially designated as a Traditional Craft.

Using high-quality locally grown madake bamboo and finished with a wide range of techniques such as yotsume-ami and ajiro-ami weaving, these bamboo crafts are known for their high level of completion—so intricate you can feel their elegance.

In the exhibition rooms, materials and explanations about craftsmanship passed down over many years are presented in categories such as “History,” “Materials,” and “Life and Living.” One highlight is a section featuring works by artisans known as master craftsmen, where you’ll also find innovative interior items beyond conventional ideas, with plenty of pieces that hint at the future of bamboo craft.

Hands-on workshops, where you can try making items like flower baskets and bamboo bells, are also popular. Experience the deep appeal of bamboo craft by using time-honored techniques and working with natural materials.
