Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park
A national park known for its untouched nature and dramatic landscapes shaped by volcanoes and calderas.
One of Japan’s first national parks, established in 1934. The park spans Kagoshima and Miyazaki prefectures and is divided into two areas: the northern Kirishima area and the southern Kinkowan (Kagoshima Bay) area, formed by a chain of massive caldera volcanoes.
In the northern Kirishima area, where more than 20 large and small volcanoes line up, highlights include landscapes that showcase nature’s grandeur, such as crater lakes and summit marshlands formed by volcanic activity. Another feature is the wide variety of plant life, including Miyama Kirishima, which blooms in the high-altitude areas around the volcanoes. The southern Kinkowan (Kagoshima Bay) area centers on Sakurajima, Kagoshima’s symbol, which frequently sends up volcanic smoke, and offers many sights such as Takato Pass, Mt. Kaimon, Lake Ikeda, Chiringashima Island, Ogawa Falls, and Cape Sata. For exhibits and staff guidance, visitor centers in places like Ebino Plateau, Takachiho-gawara, Shigetomi Coast, and Sakurajima are convenient.
Along with hiking and trekking courses where you can fully enjoy nature, there are plenty of hands-on options, including guided tours and activities. You’ll also want to enjoy the many hot spring areas scattered in and around the park, created by volcanic activity.
