Shiramizu Falls
Pure enough to take your breath away-let your senses unwind to the music of this famed waterfall.
This waterfall was formed where several underground streams springing from Mt. Aso come together, with a drop of Approx. 30 meters and a width of Approx. 40 meters—an impressive scale worthy of its reputation. It’s counted as one of the “Top 100 Scenic Spots in Oita Prefecture,” and in 2007 it was also registered as a nationally Registered Monument. The name “Shiramizu Falls” is said to come from the way it pours down like many strands of thread, making the water look white.
Approx. 500 years ago, a teahouse was even set up near the falls so visitors could enjoy the beautiful view from the best spot, and many well-known poets of the time are said to have visited and penned famous verses.
Untouched nature stretches out all around, and the seasons of fresh greenery and autumn leaves in particular are pleasant and comfortable—making it a calming spiritual spot where visitors come from far and wide to feel the pure, negative ions in the air.
