Inukai Falls

A famous waterfall that even Sakamoto Ryoma admired, with Mt. Takachiho as its backdrop.

Inukai Falls is a waterfall on the Nakatsugawa River in the Amorigawa River system, 118 ft high and 72 ft wide. Set against Mt. Takachiho in the Kirishima mountain range, the powerful flow cascading over columnar-jointed rock cliffs is truly impressive.

Sakamoto Ryoma and his wife Oryo are known for taking Japan’s first honeymoon. They chose what is now Kirishima City as their destination, and in a letter Ryoma sent to his sister, he wrote that they stopped by this waterfall along with Kirishima-jingu Shrine and Iodani Onsen, and were moved by the view.

After walking down a stairway of around 300 m that has been maintained as a promenade, you’ll reach an observation deck where you can see the impressive waterfall up close. It’s a bit farther from the falls, but if you’re not confident about your stamina, the Falls Viewpoint at the parking lot along the prefectural road is recommended.
