Orofure Pass

Orofure Pass is located along Hokkaido Route 2 (Lake Toya–Noboribetsu Line), connecting Sobetsu Town and Noboribetsu City. From the Orofure Observation Deck, visitors can enjoy sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean, Lake Kuttara, Lake Toya, and Mt. Yotei.

The scenery changes beautifully with the seasons: vibrant autumn foliage paints the mountainside in rich colors, while winter transforms the landscape into a world of snow and frost-covered trees unique to Hokkaido. In spring and summer, the lush greenery offers a refreshing, soul-soothing experience. The surrounding mixed forest of Erman’s birch and conifer trees adds to the natural charm.

If visiting between January and February, don’t miss the “frost-covered forest” near the Orofure Tunnel—an enchanting sight where frost-covered trees glisten and change appearance with shifting temperatures and light, creating a breathtaking spectacle.

A hiking trail from the Orofure Observation Deck leads to the summit of Mt. Orofure, the third-highest peak in the Iburi region at 1,230.7 meters. During favorable seasons, it’s a rewarding hike with highlights like the towering Rakan Rock and alpine flowers such as Glaucidium palmatum and Geum pentapetalum blooming along the trail.
