Nobeyama Station
The highest-altitude JR railway station in Japan.
The JR Koumi Line extends for 78.9 kilometers from Kobuchizawa Station in Hokuto City, Yamanashi Prefecture, to Komoro Station in Komoro City, Nagano Prefecture. Between the third station, Kiyosato, and the fourth station, Nobeyama, lies the highest point along any JR railway line in Japan, at an altitude of 1,375 meters.
Remarkably, of Japan's ten highest JR stations, nine are located along this Koumi Line. Among these, Nobeyama Station is officially recognized as the highest JR station, situated at 1,345.67 meters above sea level.
At the front of the station, a wooden monument marks Nobeyama as Japan's highest JR station, making it a popular photo spot. Additionally, there are three miniature markers on the platform itself—try finding all of them!
Nobeyama Station is also a model of environmental consciousness, known as an “Eco Station,” featuring initiatives such as solar power generation and enhanced thermal insulation. The station design includes decorative paneling made from locally sourced larch wood symbolizing the surrounding mountains, and a ceiling with fluorescent ink depicting Nobeyama’s beautiful summer night sky.
Near the station entrance, don't miss Ginga Park, where a steam locomotive "C56," which formerly operated on the Koumi Line, is displayed—another spot well worth visiting.
