Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts

A historic museum with a collection of Approx. 8,700 works, including National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties.

Last update :

Opened in 1936 as Japan’s third public art museum, this historic museum is located in Tennoji Park. It reopened in March 2025 after a large-scale renovation lasting Approx. 2 years and 5 months.

In addition to works gathered through donations from Osaka’s business community and others, the museum holds Approx. 8,700 items, including National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties. For its special exhibitions, it showcases works from its collection—such as Japanese and Chinese paintings, sculpture, and crafts—on an ongoing basis, and also hosts limited-time special exhibitions. The Tennoji Gallery on B2 also regularly holds open-call exhibitions organized by art groups, featuring publicly submitted works and more.

The building itself, a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan, is another highlight. Areas outside the galleries are free to enter, so you can easily explore the interior, including recreated design details from the time it was built. It’s also recommended to relax on the terrace overlooking Keitakuen, a renowned modern Japanese garden, or at the cafe ENFUSE Osaka. Be sure to stop by the museum shop, which sells original and art-related goods.
