Poroto no Mori
Enjoy rich nature and a wide range of activities in the forest stretching along the shores of Lake Poroto.
Located near the town center of Shiraoi, Hokkaido, Poroto no Mori is a natural recreation forest that surrounds Lake Poroto. Along the lakeshore, an Approx. 6-kilometer walking trail has been developed, where you can enjoy strolling or cycling while taking in the scenery of each season. The lake also offers water activities such as canoeing, SUP, and smelt fishing.
There are several walking courses, including one that circles the lakeshore, one leading to the scenic Bokodai Observatory, and one passing through Momijidaira, known for its beautiful autumn leaves. From Bokodai Observatory, you can take in sweeping views of mountains such as Mt. Tarumae, Mt. Horohoro, and Shiraoi-dake, as well as the Pacific Ocean. In the forest, you can see marsh plants such as large colonies of Asian skunk cabbage, and animals including Ezo deer, red foxes, and Ezo flying squirrels also live here.
There is also a campground and bungalows in the forest, so overnight stays are possible. The campground is a free-site camping area with space for up to 100 tents, and there are five bungalows. Advance reservations are required, and the operating period runs from April 1 to November 30.
