Shukutsu Panorama Observatory
An observation deck offering a breathtaking panoramic view of the Hakucho Bridge-recognized as one of Japan’s officially designated Night View Heritage Sites.
Located just south of Hakucho Bridge, the symbol of Muroran City in Hokkaido, the Shukutsu Panorama Observatory sits atop a small hill about 70 meters above sea level, offering sweeping views of the city and the bridge. While there are several observatories in Muroran where visitors can admire Hakucho Bridge-the largest suspension bridge in eastern Japan- Shukutsu Panorama Observatory is unique for its vantage point that reveals the bridge’s full, elegant span, resembling a swan with its wings outstretched.
From the observatory, visitors can also take in views of Daikoku Island, Etomo Seaside Park, and the marina, and on clear days, even see Mt. Showa-Shinzan, Mt. Usu, and Mt. Yotei in the distance.
At night, the illuminated Hakucho Bridge and the glowing industrial skyline of Muroran create a stunning, dreamlike panorama. With few streetlights nearby, the area allows for an unobstructed night view, which has earned it official recognition as one of Japan’s Night View Heritage Sites. The observatory offers a perfect vantage point to appreciate the contrasting beauty of Muroran-serene by day, and glittering by night.
