Kinbyobu and Ginbyobu Cliffs
Two dramatic cliffs in Muroran that gleam gold and silver in the light of the rising and setting sun.
Along the coastline of Muroran City in Hokkaido stand two striking cliffs known as Kinbyobu and Ginbyobu. Their names-meaning “Golden Screen” and “Silver Screen”-come from the way Kinbyobu glows gold in the morning sun, while Ginbyobu shimmers silver in the evening light. These natural formations, created by the forces of nature over time, are both counted among the Eight Scenic Views of Muroran (Muroran Hakkei).
Kinbyobu, located between two other scenic spots-Cape Chikyu (Chikyu Misaki) and Tokkarisho-features a series of towering reddish-brown cliffs about 100 meters high. Ginbyobu, called Chinuyepira (“cliff with carvings”) in the Ainu language, refers to the cliff face stretching between Harukaramoi and Ebisu Island. Each offers a different atmosphere depending on the time of day, though Kinbyobu is best viewed in the morning and Ginbyobu in the evening.
Access is convenient: Kinbyobu is about a 5-minute drive from JR Bokoi Station, while Ginbyobu is about 20 minutes by car from JR Muroran Station. Both have viewing spots, and sightseeing boat tours are also popular for enjoying the dramatic scenery from the sea.
