Maishima Incineration Plant

This waste treatment plant combines a garbage incineration facility and a bulky waste shredding facility. Its exterior was designed by Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser, who is also known for his environmentally conscious architecture. The design reflects the hope that the building will take root in the local community and become a symbol of harmony among technology, ecology, and art. The red and yellow stripes painted on the walls are meant to evoke the flames used to process garbage inside the plant. The many curves throughout the design represent the idea that straight lines and identical forms do not exist in nature.

Surrounded by abundant greenery, the building symbolizes harmony with nature. Fruit-bearing trees and a biotope pond have been created so that birds and insects can live here, and in the future, the entire area is planned to become like a forest covered in greenery.

You can also tour the inside of the plant with a reservation. Open days, when tours are available without a reservation, are held regularly, so be sure to check in advance.

The building is also illuminated for a limited time. With its colorful and striking design that catches the eye even from afar, it is well worth a visit just to admire the exterior.
