Yamagata Hanagasa Festival
An energetic parade featuring around 10,000 dancers, their vibrant flower-decorated hats (hanagasa) swaying beautifully as they dance through the streets.
Held annually from August 5th to 7th, the Yamagata Hanagasa Festival is one of the four major summer festivals in the Tohoku region. Around 10,000 dancers parade through central Yamagata City, rhythmically waving vibrant flower-decorated hats (hanagasa). The 1.2-kilometer parade route stretches along National Route 112, passing through Tokamachi, Honcho, and Nanokamachi, culminating in front of the historic Bunshokan building. The air resonates with enthusiastic chants of "Yassho, Makasho," creating an exhilarating atmosphere.
Traditionally, the highlight of the festival was the perfectly synchronized beauty of group performances. Today, however, the dances have diversified significantly—from graceful and elegant women’s performances (Seicho Onna Odori) to bold and vigorous men's dances (Seicho Otoko Odori), dynamic hat-twirling routines, and original, creative choreography. There are even special time slots when spectators can spontaneously join the festivities.
The parade runs from around 6:00pm to 9:45pm. Viewing is free from sidewalks along the route, but reserved seating is also available for purchase in front of Yamagata City Hall. Additionally, at the Bunshokan plaza where the parade ends, the Yamagata Hanagasa Food Festival takes place simultaneously, featuring stalls serving local specialties like tama-konnyaku and imoni, offering the chance to enjoy delicious local cuisine along with the vibrant dancing.
