Hijiori Onsen

Relax in the atmosphere of a traditional therapeutic hot spring retreat in this onsen town with 1,200 years of history.

Last update :

A historic hot spring resort area said to have opened in 807 during the Heian period. Set at the foot of Mt. Gassan, the highest peak of the Dewa Sanzan mountains, it has a charming streetscape of Approx. 19 inns lining the Dozangawa River, full of nostalgic travel appeal. Its old-fashioned atmosphere feels calm and gentle, offering soothing comfort to visitors.

The spring water here is abundant and is a sodium chloride and bicarbonate hot spring. Thanks to the combined effects of salt, baking soda, and carbon dioxide, it is known for its strong therapeutic benefits and has long been loved as a place for hot spring healing. Every ryokan in Hijiori Onsen offers these mineral-rich waters straight from the source. Some facilities also offer day-use bathing, making it easy to stop by casually.

The morning market, held every day except in winter, is also popular. In addition to freshly harvested vegetables and wild mountain plants, you’ll find local foods such as handmade sasamaki and shisomaki. Warm interactions with local residents are another soothing part of the experience.
